The underlying issue behind Thyroid dis-ease

Licorice as treatment for Barrett's esophagus

Licorice, or Glycyrrhiza glabra, is a legume and member of the Fabaceae, or pea family. It has been used for over 3,000 years to treat a variety of ailments. Currently, medical studies support the use of licorice for the treatment of inflamed intestinal tissues, but its does much more than just that. Not only is licorice an adaptogen and strong anti-viral, but it can also be used specifically in the treatment of Barrett's esophagus.

Licorice contains Gylcyrrhizin, which is very biologically active. It has strong hypertensive properties and can bring blood pressure to dangerous highs. It also can act as antidiuretic, a mineralcoriticoid and can interact with drugs. When consumed, the body converts glycyrrhizin into glycyrrhetinic acid. The glycyrrhetinic acid has a pseudo-aldosterone effect in the body, causing the body to retain water and increase blood pressure. Because of this, most licorice used today is in the form of DGL or deglycyrrhizinated licorice, with the glycyrrhizin removed. This allows us to reap the benefits, without the danger of raising blood pressure. Studies have shown that DGL may increase mucous production and accelerate the healing of duodenal and gastric ulcers. It has also been proven effective in the treatment of chronic stomach discomfort and protect the stomach from NSAIDs (such as aspirin). In Barrett's esophagus, due to stress on the tissue, normal epithelial cells are replaced by cells similar to those lining the intestinal tract. Since licorice targets these cells specifically, it has strong potential to help heal tissue damage related to Barrett's esophagus.

How DGL helps heal Barrett's esophagus

DGL can be used in chewable form to coat the esophagus and have a direct effect on the mucosal tissue. The salivary enzymes release the healing properties, increase absorption and stimulate healing to occur immediately as it is swallowed. DGL addresses Barrett's esophagus in many ways. It can decrease inflammation, reduce discomfort, heal the gastric tissues and even reduce the gastric spasms that often cause the acid and tissue irritation to leak in the first place.

There are many active constituents behind the vast healing powers of DGL. The root of the licorice plant contains 10 triterpenes and 22 flavonoids. Licorice's flavonoids, including isoliquiritigen, help inhibit acid secretion and prevent the growth of harmful intestinal bacteria. Licorice magnifies the effect of the mucus by increasing blood flow and promoting secretion, growth and activity of the protective mucosa cells. It provides both a protective mucus layer and deep anti-inflammatory effects. Licorice also reduces spasms in the visceral muscles, relaxing the tissue.

DGL can also increase the concentration of bilirubin in the bile. Bilirubin is a bile pigment created by the breakdown of heme in red blood cells. There is some debate on its healing or harmful effects. Although high concentrations of bilirubin often indicate disease, new studies show it can also act as a cellular antioxidant protecting tissues from free radical damage. Antioxidants are definitely desirable when preventing and repairing any tissue damage.

There is vast research on the overall medicinal benefits of Glycyrrhiza glabra, but not any clinical trials for the treatment of Barrett's esophagus specifically. Licorice shows great promise as a treatment for Barrett's esophagus and hopefully will soon have more research to back it up. Barrett's esophagus is a largely due to lifestyle, and the causative factors, such as smoking, drinking, and poor diet, must be removed if you truly wish to restore health, balance and happiness.

Johnson & Johnson baby lotion found contaminated with deadly bacteria

More quality control issues at Johnson & Johnson (J&J) have spurred yet another consumer product recall. At least 2,200 bottles of Aveeno Baby Calming Comfort Lotion from lot number 0161LK have been found to be contaminated with coagulase-negative staphylococci, a highly-contagious, antibiotic-resistant pathogen that can cause crippling illness.

The recall was announced after tests conducted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) revealed higher-than-normal levels of the pathogen that exceeded maximum levels. However, J&J says later tests conducted by an "independent laboratory" showed that the bacteria levels in the lot did not exceed maximum levels.

The tainted bottles were sold in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Texas, according to J&J, but are not being recalled at the consumer level. Though the company has pulled the contaminated lot from store shelves, it is not asking people who already purchased bottles from the lot to return them.

The J&J recall announcement specifically states that the recall "is not being undertaken on the basis of adverse events and the potential for adverse health events is remote," but rather out of "an abundance of caution." Concerned individuals that already purchased lotion from the lot in question are free to contact the company for a refund at (877) 298-2525 if they choose to do so (http://www.aveeno.com/babycare/product-home).

J&J insists that even the recalled lotions are safe, and also claims that coagulase-negative staphylococci is a common and generally harmless pathogen. However, a 1999 study published in the journal Annual Review of Medicine explains that coagulase-negative staphylococci is highly transmissible, particularly in hospitals, and can cause central nervous system infections, native or prosthetic valve endocarditis, urinary tract infections, and endophthalmitis (http://www.annualreviews.org/doi/abs/10.1146/annurev.med.50.1.223).

Throughout the past year and a half, J&J recalled at least 12 different consumer products manufactured by McNeil Consumer Healthcare. Meanwhile, two longtime executives at J&J will be retiring in March, according to The Washington Post. Patrick Mutchler, group chairman for over-the-counter drugs, nutritionals and wellness and prevention products, and Pericles Stamatiades, head of global strategy for consumer products, will be departing after having worked at the company for 35 years and 28 years, respectively (http://www.washingtonpost.com).

Proof that the cancer industry doesn't want a cure - even if it's a pharmaceutical

A safe and effective cure for cancer has been discovered with a drug that was once used for unusual metabolic problems. Yet, the cancer industry shows no interest with following up on dichloroacetate (DCA) research from University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, reported in 2007. That's because DCA is no longer patented. (1)

That research also confirmed cancer as a metabolic malfunction, not a weird mutation of cells often explained away as a genetic issue. But the medical mafia doesn't want you to hear about it. But it confirms what most alternative cancer therapists already know.

Since Nixon declared the "war on cancer" in the 1970s, the cancer industry has succeeded with raising money for researching very expensive chemo substances at $50,000 to $100,000 per round or more for toxic therapies that rarely work. (2)

Explaining DCA research results

Evangelos Michelakis and the Alberta University research team tested DCA on human cancer cells outside the body and in cancerous mice with profound success. DCA was once used for unusual metabolic disorders. The worst side effects, which rarely occur, include some numbness and an affected gait.

The mice were fed DCA in water, and in weeks they had remarkable tumor shrinkage. This indicates DCA can be taken orally. DCA works by restoring the cells' mitochondria. Michelakis and his team had discovered that the mitochondria in cancer cells are not permanently damaged and irreparable. This is what mainstream medicine thinks.

With mitochondria malfunctioning, cancer cells use glucose fermentation for survival energy. This fermentation occurs when glycolysis (glucose conversion) occurs in an anaerobic cellular environment, which can be created by benign tumor masses, toxins, and low pH levels.

DCA restores mitochondria in cells to make them function properly. Another function of normal mitochondria is signaling apoptosis, or cellular self destruction. Normal cells die and become replaced constantly. But with cancer cells, the apoptosis signal is nullified, making cancer cells "immortal." (3)

The Alberta University researchers also realized that glycolysis fermentation in cancer cells produces lactic acid. The lactic acid breaks down the collagen holding those cells together in a tumor. This allows cancer cells to easily break away from a tumor shrinking with mainstream therapies.

The researchers reasoned this is why cancer metastasizes or spreads to different parts of the body or reappears after remission from chemo.

Tragic hypocrisy

Alternative cancer therapies have little or no problem with metastatic cancer or even cancer reoccurring after remission. Most alternative cancers simply cure cancers completely.

DCA offers the cancer industry an opportunity to come up with a pharmaceutical cure that is much cheaper and safer than their current standard of care. Yet the cancer industry is ignoring this opportunity. Instead, DCA is a homeless orphan begging for research funds to avoid legal issues with off label use on cancer. (4)

Alternative cancer practitioners have always simply tried out and when they succeeded shared them with others who cared more about healing than money and power.

The medical mafia has created a matrix that demands big bucks to make big bucks for sick care instead of curing. Everyone in on the scam makes out financially. The cancer industry accuses alternative cancer therapists of quackery and taking advantage of the desperately ill for financial gain. Accusing others of your motives and crimes is called projection.

The medical/pharmaceutical complex is crony capitalism that doesn't want a cure for cancer from anywhere.

Omega-3 foods essential to treat nerve damage after traumatic injury

People that have suffered a traumatic injury face an uphill battle as they attempt to regain their health and fight the risk of depression as a long term consequence of the event. British researchers from Queen Mary at the University of London have published the result of a study in the Journal of Neuroscience that explains how omega-3 fatty acids play a significant role in preventing and protecting nerves from injury. The research focused on peripheral nerve cells which transmit signals between the brain and the spinal cord to the rest of the body. Omega-3 fats from food sources including sardines, salmon, walnuts and flax seeds provide for decreased cell death from injury and may offer significant protection against future damage.

Current research indicates that our nerves do have a limited capacity to regenerate, but recovery is severely limited depending on the extent of the injury. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for the body's normal growth and development and have been well researched for their health benefits, largely focused on brain and heart health. The body is unable to manufacture its own Omega-3 fat supply, so it is necessary to obtain sufficient intake from foods such as oily fish, nuts and seeds or through supplementation.

Omega-3 fats help prevent nerve damage and assist the repair process

Researchers studied the effect of omega-3 fats on isolated mice nerve cells, known to parallel human nerve responses. They simulated nerve damage caused from an accident or injury by either stretching the cells or starving them of oxygen. Both types of damage can kill a significant portion of nerve cells, but enrichment with omega-3 fatty acids in cells gave them significant protection and decreased cell death.

The study also examined sciatic nerve damage in the mice. They found that a high level of omega-3 fatty acids helped mice to recover from sciatic nerve injury more quickly and more fully, and that their muscles were less likely to waste following nerve damage. The team leader, Dr. Adina Michael-Titus, Professor of Neuroscience concluded "Our previous research has shown that these fatty acids could have beneficial effects in a number of neurological conditions. This new study suggests that they could also have a role in treating peripheral nerve injuries."

The findings from this research should come as no surprise to integrative health followers. The omega-3 fats EPA and DHA are essential building blocks to all cellular structures in the body and are particularly dominant in the brain and nervous system. A healthy supply of omega-3 fatty acids allows for natural cell repair and the effective chemical and electrical communications that are important to optimal nerve function. Consuming fatty fish three to four times a week or supplementing with molecularly distilled fish oil (1 to 2.4 grams total EPA/DHA) supports the nervous system and regeneration process after injury.
