USDA to mask sodium benzoate preservative with new 'anti-microbial' label to trick consumers

Kraft Foods Global, Inc. and a food chemical company known as Kemin Food Technologies, Inc. have both propositioned the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)'s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) in recent years to approve the use of propionic acid and salt solutions in various new food applications, including in raw meat and poultry products, sausages, hot dogs, soups, stews, salads, and brine injections.

According to a recent May 7 petition filing, the Des Moines, Ia.-based Kemin is seeking approval for what it says are safe and effective antimicrobial alternatives to sodium lactate and other preservatives commonly used in meat products. Kemin says its liquid propionic acid and salts solutions, collectively known as BactoCEASE, extend the shelf life of meat products, and protect them against contamination by Listeria monocytogenes.

But long-term consumption of both propionic acid and sodium benzoate has been linked to causing serious side effects, including brain damage, personality disorders, gastrointestinal problems, autism, and various other neurological problems. And yet Kemin wants to have these additives specifically listed on ingredient labels as "anti-microbial" nutrients in order to fool the public into thinking they are safe.

"Ingestion of propionic acid or its salts has been reported to induce behavioral disturbances in some children and migraine in three adults," says Bibra Toxicology Advice & Consulting, a toxicology consulting firm. "Repeated oral administration of propionic acid to rats produce damage and tumors in the forestomach, and effects on the esophagus in dogs."

Some BactoCEASE solutions also contain sodium benzoate, which has been shown to deprive bodily cells of much needed oxygen, and break down the immune system. And like propionic acid and its salts, sodium benzoate, which is already commonly used in many processed foods, combines with both vitamin C and vitamin E to produce benzene, which is a known carcinogen (http://www.naturalnews.com/033726_sodium_benzoate_cancer.html).

FSIS waiver allows companies to use new, unapproved food technologies without approval

Even though BactoCEASE has not been officially approved by FSIS, manufacturers can still use it in food products as long as they obtain an FSIS waiver. This waiver essentially bypasses, for a short period of time, the normal safety route for utilizing new food additives, and allows producers and manufacturers to begin using untested chemicals on an experimental basis (http://www.fsis.usda.gov/oppde/op/technology/new_technology_waiver.pdf).

If and when the USDA eventually approves BactoCEASE for commercial use, it will show up on food packaging with "customer-friendly" labeling in accordance with Kemin's requests. And this labeling, of course, will confuse consumers into thinking the anti-microbial product is safer than it really is, a marketing trick that the industrial food industry relies upon to retain customers.

A deadly strain of a hospital superbug has become resistant to a last-line antibiotic used to treat infections, scientists have warned. Although it has not spread so far, doctors said 'the risk that MRSA could eventually overwhelm even our last-line drugs is a very serious one' branding it 'a dangerous organism in hospitals.' American researchers have found since 2002 there have been 12 cases of the antibiotic resistant superbug CC5.

It has become proficient at picking up resistance genes including the one that makes it resistant to vancomycin - the last line of defence for hospital-acquired infections.

Researcher Jim Sliwa said: 'MRSA strains are leading causes of hospital-acquired infections in the United States, and clonal cluster 5 (CC5) is the predominant lineage responsible for these infections.
'Since 2002, there have been 12 cases of vancomycin-resistant S. aureus (VRSA) infection in the United States - all CC5 strains.'Vancomycin is a key last-line bactericidal drug for treating these infections.' 

In the study researchers sequenced the genomes of all available vancomycin-resistant MRSA strains to find what distinguishes them from other lineages and why CC5 is apparently more adept than other strains at picking up vancomycin resistance.

Vancomycin-resistant MRSA strains and other CC5 lineages have some important differences from other types of MRSA, including adaptations that allow them to co-exist with other types of bacteria and may help them take up foreign DNA.It was found they lacked a set of genes that encode an antibiotic protein made by bacteria to kill other bacteria. Mr Sliwa said: 'This is important because it enables CC5 to get along well with other bacteria in mixed infections. 

'Instead of killing off competing organisms, CC5 aims to co-exist. This enables it to pick up genes - like the one that encodes vancomycin resistance - from unexpected places. 'Mixed infections are breeding grounds for antibiotic resistance because they encourage the exchange of genes among very different kinds of organisms.'In roughly the place where these bacteriocin genes are missing is a unique cluster of genes that encode enterotoxins - proteins that attack the human host and, again, could make it easier for mixed populations of bacteria to grow at infection sites.' Researchers also discovered CC5 has a mutation in a gene which is known to influence the ability to assimilate foreign DNA. He added: 'This makes CC5 a dangerous organism in hospitals. 

'In hospitals, pathogens are under continuous pressure from antibiotics to survive and evolve, and CC5 isolates appear to be very well adapted to succeed by acquiring new resistances. 'Frequent use of antibiotics in hospital patients could select for strains like CC5 that have an enhanced ability to co-exist with bacteria that provide genes for antibiotic resistance.'The findings are published by the American Society for Microbiology.

Zucchini flower fritters with feta and basil recipe

These zucchini-flower fritters are filled with a creamy combination of feta and fresh basil, then fried until crisp. If you have a wok burner on the side of your barbecue, use it to cook the fritters and keep all the cooking aromas outside. Serve the flowers in a paper napkin with a sprinkle of salt for a real taste sensation.

Ingredients

1 cup plain flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup water
1 tsp olive oil
1 egg, separated
16 zucchini flowers
1 cup marinated feta, drained
10 basil leaves
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Oil for deep-frying

Preparation

Sift flour and salt together in a bowl. Whisk water, olive oil and egg yolk together, then whisk into the flour until combined. Allow to rest for 30 minutes.

Beat egg white until soft peaks form, then fold through the batter just prior to using.

Gently open each zucchini flower and remove the stamen. Wash gently if needed and dry well.

Mash feta slightly with a fork. Chop basil leaves and add to the feta, seasoning with pepper. Place a heaped teaspoonful of the filling into each flower and press the petals back around it firmly.

Pour a 4–5 cm layer of oil in a large saucepan or wok and heat over a medium–high heat. Dip the zucchinis flowers, one at a time, into the batter and into the hot oil. Fry until golden.

Drain on kitchen paper, season with salt and serve immediately.

Edible Flowers Permaculture

Flowers play an important role in an edible landscape and in any food producing permaculture.

The benefits of integrating flowering plants into a vegetable garden are numerous: they attract bees and other insects to pollinate and predate on common pests, fragrant flowers and flowering herbs help confuse and repel some harmful insect pests, and an exceptionally diverse range of flowers that can be harvested for pot-pourri, herb teas, aromatherapy, cut flowers and also for food.
Many fruit trees and vegetables have beautiful flowers with aesthetic value as well as other uses. Some of my favorite flowering fruits include pomegranate, quince, and all the stone fruits, and there's nothing more delightful than the fragrance of a citrus tree in flower. Salsify, chicory, globe artichoke and Jerusalem artichoke rank amongst some of the most attractive flowering vegetables.

Many the plants commonly grown in gardens solely for their flowers are medicinal and culinary herbs and some also produce edible fruit - like fuchsia which produces an edible berry. Roses have always been a great favorite in ornamental landscapes. The old traditional varieties are the best for harvesting the hips (fruit) for herb tea and jellies, but any fragrant rose can be harvested for pot pourri and if you want a real treat, try making some rose petal jam.

The elderberry bush has been used for centuries as a multi purpose plant in Europe - it's medicinal qualities are listed in most herb books, the fruit used for preserves and elder berry wine and the flowers are prized for pot pourri, wine making and most of all for making elder flower fritters (Note: recommend growing the true deciduous European Elder Sambucus nigra, not the invasive evergreen variety, Sambucus Canadensis). The flowers of pumpkin and squash are a delicacy in many cultures - you can eat the male flowers and leave the females to produce fruit.

brocolli & calendular - 100.gif There are a surprising number of regular ornamental flowers that can add colour and zest as a garnish for salads or sweet dishes: violets, pansies, petunia, carnations, calendula and gladiolus just to name a few. I love to garnish a mulberry pie with borage flowers, spice a baked custard with ginger flowers, toss nasturtium and calendula petals in a fresh garden salad, or top off a parfait with a couple of violets or heartsease.

There is a resurgence of interest in edible flowers which is rapidly becoming good business for back yard production and small scale horticulture supplying produce to local restaurants and food markets. An edible flower producer in southern California has tapped into a national market, with a US$1 million harvest from just 30 acres. Flowers for food must be free of pesticides so this is one new primary industry using only biological control. Harvest, storage, packing, transport and handling all require special care.

Care should be taken with eating flowers and it is important to remember that not all flowers are safe to eat. Never try eating the flowers of poisonous plants. If you suffer from hayfever, you're advised to give flowers a miss or try with caution as you could have an allergic reaction to the pollen. There have been cases of toxic reaction to some flowers listed as edible, possibly because local sub-species have developed a toxic compound due to different soil or climatic conditions. So be cautious, only try a small amount, one or two petals first time round. Avoid flowers that taste too bitter or caustic. Also remember that most edible flowers are primarily used as a garnish - don't go making an entire salad from your flower garden. In moderation, flowers can be used not only to brighten up the garden, but to add an exciting touch to many a dish on the table.

Breaking news: US Senator Rand Paul offers surprise amendment to rein in FDA abuses, disarm the FDA, decriminalize free speech

In a stunning and completely unannounced move, US Senator Rand Paul -- who many agree represents the best hope for the restoration of liberty in America -- has introduced an amendment to a key FDA funding bill that seeks to sharply rein in the FDA's power. It would disarm the FDA and make the agency stop using guns against the American people; it would halt the FDA's armed raids on raw milk farmers; it would also stop the FDA's outrageous and longstanding censorship of truthful health claims of dietary supplements and medicinal herbs.

This is a big deal. While it may not pass, given its sudden introduction and lack of enough time to build grassroots support, the very fact that U.S. Senator Rand Paul has introduced such an amendment is proof positive that Rand Paul is exactly the kind of leader that can help take our nation out of the age of government tyranny and censorship and into a new era of transparency, accountability and liberty. Ending the FDA's unconstitutional censorship of truthful health claims could, without question, help prevent disease and greatly reduce the out-of-control health care costs that are bankrupting America.

President, today I'm offering an amendment to the FDA. I'm troubled by images of armed agents raiding Amish farms and preventing them selling milk directly from the cow. I think we have bigger problems in our country than sending armed FDA agents into peaceful farmers' land and telling them they can't sell milk directly from the cow.

My amendment has three parts. First, it attempts to stop the FDA's overzealous regulations of vitamins, food and supplements by codifying the first amendment prohibition on prior restraint. What do I mean by that?

The first amendment says you can't prevent speech, even commercial speech, in advance of the speech. You can't tell cheerios that they can't say there's a health benefit to their Cheerios. Under our current FDA laws, FDA says if you want to market prune juice, you can't say that it cures constipation.

You can't make a health claim about a food supplement or about a vitamin, you can do it about a pharmaceutical, but you're not allowed to do it about a health supplement.

I think this should change. There have been several court cases that show this goes against not only the spirit but the letter of the law of the First Amendment. So this amendment would change that.

This amendment would stop the FDA from censoring claims about curative, mitigative effects of dietary supplements. It would also stop the FDA from prohibiting distribution of scientific articles and publications regarding the role of nutrients in protecting against disease.

Despite four court orders condemning the practice as a violation of the First Amendment, the FDA continues to suppress consumers' right to be informed and to make informed choices by denying them this particular information. It's time for Congress to put an end to FDA censorship.

Second, my amendment would disarm the FDA.

Now, some of you might be surprised the FDA is armed. Well, you shouldn't be.

We have nearly 40 federal agencies that are armed. I'm not against having police, I'm not against the army, the military, the FBI, but I think bureaucrats don't need to be carrying weapons and I think what we ought to do, is if there is a need for an armed policeman to be there, the FBI who are trained to do this should do it. But I don't think it's a good idea to be arming bureaucrats to go on the farm to, with arms, to stop people from selling milk from a cow.

I think we have too many armed federal agencies, and that we need to put an end to this. Criminal law seems to be increasing, increasingly is using a tool of our government bureaucracy to punish and control honest businessmen for simply attempting to make a living.

Historically the criminal law was intended to punish only the most horrible offenses that everyone agreed were inherently wrong or evil, offenses like rape, murder, theft, arson - but now we've basically federalized thousands of activities and called them crimes.

If bureaucrats need to involve the police, let's have them use the FBI, but I see no reason to have the FDA carrying weapons.

Today the criminal law is used to punish behavior such as even fishing without a permit, packaging a product incorrectly or shipping something with an improper label.

Simply said, the federal government's gone too far.

The plain language of our Constitution specifies very few federal crimes. In fact, the Constitution originally only had four federal crimes and now we have thousands of federal crimes.

We've moved beyond the original intent of the Constitution. We don't even know or have a complete list of all the federal crimes. It's estimated there are over 4,000, but no one has an exact number.

Finally, my amendment will require adequate mens rea protection. In other words, when you have a crime, you're supposed to prove the intent. People have to have intended to harm someone, it can't be an honest mistake where a businessman or woman have broken a regulation and didn't intend to harm someone. If you want to convict someone of a crime and put them in jail, it should be a mens rea requirement.

This is something we have had for hundreds of years, it comes out of our common-law tradition.

This amendment would fix this problem by strengthening the mens rea component of each of the prohibited acts and the FDA acts by including the words "knowing" and "willful" before we address and accuse someone of a crime.

This I think would give protection to folks who are guilty of inadvertently guilty of breaking a regulation and would keep from overflowing our jails. We've got plenty of violent criminals without putting people in for honest breaches of regulations. If Congress is going to criminalize conduct at the federal level as it does with the FDA act, the least it can do have is have an adequate mens rea requirement. My amendment will attempt to do this.

It's not that we won't have rules at the federal level, but the rules ought to be reasonable. We ought to allow people to market vitamins. There's no earthly reason why somebody who markets prune juice can't advertise it helps with constipation.

We've gone too far, and we've abrogated the First Amendment and what we need to do is tell the FDA that the courts have ruled that the First Amendment does apply to commercial speech and the FDA has been overstepping their bounds.

Background:

The plain language of our Constitution specifies a very limited number of federal crimes. These include treason,[1] counterfeiting,[2] piracy or felonies on the high seas,[3] and offenses against the laws of nations.[4]

Yet today, we have over 4,450 criminal offenses in our federal statutes alone. This number does not include the thousands of criminal offenses scattered throughout federal regulations.

In order to enforce all these crimes, we've armed our federal agencies, and there are now over 30 federal agencies that have employees authorized to carry firearms and use them.

This cycle of criminalizing everything at the federal level and then arming all of our federal agencies needs to stop.

Recent FDA armed raids of Amish dairy farmers selling "raw" milk directly from the cow present high-profile examples of why we need to have fewer armed federal agents (and fewer federal crimes).

Part III: Mens Rea Component/Reform -

This section amends the "Prohibited acts" section of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (21 USC SS 331) to strengthen the mens rea ("guilty mind") component of each of the prohibited acts. It adds the words "knowing and willful" to each of the prohibitions.

Background:

In 2010, the Heritage Foundation and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers conducted a study and issued a report regarding the problem of not only the massive proliferation of federal criminal law in general, but particularly the erosion of any meaningful mens rea ("guilty mind") component to these federal laws.

This report-Without Intent: How Congress Is Eroding the Criminal Intent Requirement in Federal Law-found that over 57% of the offenses considered by the 109th Congress alone contained inadequate mens rea requirements, putting the innocent at risk of criminal punishment. The study also discovered consistently poor legislative drafting and broad delegation of Congress's authority to make criminal laws to unelected officials in administrative agencies-"criminalization by regulation."

If Congress is going to criminalize conduct at the federal level as it does in the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, then the least it can do is include an adequate mens rea component.

It's not just Fukushima, though that may be enough. The northern hemisphere especially had been inundated with radioactive fallout by atmospheric nuclear weapons testing from 1950 to 1963. The Nevada testing area alone produced 1200 nuclear explosions that emitted radioactive particles across the USA.

The Chernobyl incident in 1986 affected hundreds of thousands throughout Europe, Scandinavia, and Russia. The boom in nuclear reactor power plants had already started and was constantly increasing, along with considerable radiation leaking.

A 1996 international court interpretation of international treaties opened the door for widespread use of depleted uranium (DU) that had been prohibited for use as ammunition projectiles that could pierce armor. Tons of DU ammunition has been used in Bosnia and the Mideast since, leaving a radioactive mess that will last for life times.

Depleted uranium is a deceptive term. It is basically what's left after enriched uranium is used for reactors. But DU cannot be used in reactors anymore. DU is still highly radioactive, so using it for ammunition creates a lucrative industry instead of an expensive toxic waste disposal issue.

Part of DU's effectiveness is the fact that DU projectiles ignite on impact and penetrate armor. But that process also functions to emit radioactive vapors and particles in the immediate area, which accumulates in the environment and contaminates locally for life times as well as getting carried by winds for miles to contaminate elsewhere.

The point of this lengthy introduction is to make you aware that we have been and continue to be immersed in excess radioactivity from several sources. Fukushima has added more dangerous radioactivity, but corporate-government-media officials deny its dangers.

What must we do?

Forget trying to influence governments, the nuclear power industry and military industrial complex, or the mainstream media. They have circled their vested interest wagons, denied the dangers, and ignored the solutions. We have to take radiation protection upon ourselves.

Vitamin C: This antioxidant is effective against radiation. Radioactive atoms (radionuclides) have missing electrons that they replace by stealing electrons from other atoms causing cellular and DNA damage. That's oxidation in a nutshell. An antioxidant gives those atoms the electrons they need, thus neutralizing oxidative stress.

It's not easy swallowing 10 grams total of ascorbic acid at intervals daily. Injected C or IV C is hard to come by. Why chemicals threaten the future of the human species

Tokyo soil so contaminated with radiation it would be considered nuclear waste in US

Radioactive fallout from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster continues to show up at dangerously high levels in the city of Tokyo, which is located roughly 200 miles from the actual disaster site. According to an analysis of five random soil samples recently taken by nuclear expert Arnie Gundersen, the soil around Tokyo is so contaminated with Fukushima radiation that it would be considered nuclear waste here in the U.S.

During a recent trip to Tokyo, Gundersen collected soil samples from a sidewalk, a children's playground, a rooftop, a patch of moss by the side of a road, and the lawn of a judicial building. After sending those samples in for testing, it was revealed that each one had high levels of radioactive cesium-134 (CS134) and cesium-137 (CS137), while three of the samples contained high levels of cobalt-60 (CO60). One of the samples also tested positive for uranium-235 (U235).

"[When I was in Tokyo, I took some samples [...] and sent them to the lab," said Gundersen in a recent video report. "And the lab determined that all of them would be qualified as radioactive waste here in the United States and would have to be shipped to Texas to be disposed of."

According to Gundersen's estimate, the spent fuel rods in Fukushima's Reactor 4, which are currently in the process of cooling and have been for over a year, should be fine if nothing further occurs at the site. But during a recent interview, he explained how a seismic event or other unexpected disaster would likely crack the cooling pool and expose these fuel rods, which number in the thousands, to open air.

The significance of this is that the spent fuel rods in Reactor 4 are almost sure to explode as a result of this exposure, which would cause the largest and most significant release of radiation to date. Tips to Prevent Alzheimer's Disease Revealed

Alzheimer's disease is a much feared condition, especially in view of the soaring numbers worldwide. What can we do to prevent the contraction of this debilitating ailment? Of course, an overall health-promoting lifestyle and dietary protocol would go a long way. How about simple steps to incorporate into our daily lives? Three recent studies put forth some suggestions.

Drink Apple Juice

Researchers from the University of Massachusetts have recently discovered that drinking apple juice may help delay the onset of Alzheimer's disease. They found that mice which consumed the human equivalent of 2 glasses of the juice each day for 30 days produced less beta-amyloid, a small protein fragment. This substance is supposedly responsible for forming the "senile plaques" which are often detected in the brains of persons hit by Alzheimer's disease.

This study, which was published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, followed previous laboratory studies, which had found that consuming apple juice helped enhance the performance of mice in maze trials, preventing the drop in performance that would otherwise take place as the mice grew old.

"These findings provide further evidence linking nutritional and genetic risk factors for age-related neurodegeneration and suggest that regular consumption of apple juice can not only help to keep one's mind functioning at its best, but may also be able to delay key aspects of Alzheimer's disease and augment therapeutic approaches," said Thomas B Shea, PhD, from the university's Center for Cellular Neurobiology, Neurodegeneration Research, who was also the leader of the study.

On top of helping to ward off Alzheimer's disease, apple juice is a wonderfully refreshing and detoxifying beverage. Of course, fresh organic apple juice is the best.

Stay off Cigarettes and Alcohol

A study presented at the American Academy of Neurology 60th Anniversary Annual Meeting held in Chicago in 2008 had found that heavy smokers and heavy drinkers get Alzheimer's disease several years earlier than those who did not have such habits. The study team had looked at data on 938 persons aged above 59 who had a diagnosis or possible diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease, including their drinking and smoking history.

Heavy smokers, defined as those who smoked at least one pack of cigarettes each day, developed the condition 2.3 years earlier than their non-smoking counterparts. On the other hand, heavy drinkers, defined as those who drank more than two drinks each day, got the disease 4.8 years earlier than the non-drinkers.

"These results are significant because it's possible that if we can reduce or eliminate heavy smoking and drinking, we could substantially delay the onset of Alzheimer's disease for people and reduce the number of people who have Alzheimer's at any point in time," said Ranjan Duara, MD, from the Wien Center for Alzheimer's Disease at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, the leader of the study. Duara was also Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology.

"It has been projected that a delay in the onset of the disease by five years would lead to a nearly 50-percent reduction in the total number of Alzheimer's cases. In this study, we found that the combination of heavy drinking and heavy smoking reduced the age of onset of Alzheimer's disease by six to seven years, making these two factors among the most important preventable risk factors for Alzheimer's disease," he added.

Staying off cigarettes and alcohol not only helps to prevent Alzheimer's disease, it is also an important part of any health-promoting lifestyle. Quite simply, the level of health one can reach is highly limited if one ingests and inhales toxic substances on a daily basis.

Keep the Mind Active

Going further back, a study published online in 2007 in Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology, found that an elderly person who was cognitively active was 2.6 times less likely to get dementia and Alzheimer's disease, as compared to his cognitively inactive counterparts. This reduced risk was after factors such as past cognitive activity, current social activity and socioeconomic status had been accounted for.

The study had looked at over 700 elderly persons in Chicago. Their average age was 80, and they went through annual cognitive testing for up to 5 years.

"Alzheimer's disease is among the most feared consequences of old age. The enormous public health problems posed by the disease are expected to increase during the coming decades as the proportion of old people in the United States increases. This underscores the urgent need for strategies to prevent the disease or delay its onset," said Robert S Wilson, PhD, from the Rush Alzheimer's Disease Center at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, the leader of the study.

The brain, like our physical muscles, also needs exercise. Replace coffee with rooibos tea to naturally boost energy and health

Benjamin Franklin famously said, "In all things, moderation." When it comes to coffee, there are worse things you could be putting in your body, (assuming you are using organic, fair trade coffee). Still, it's a good practice to take a break from anything you consume a lot of, a couple of times a year for a couple of weeks. So if you're looking to get off of coffee, or just take a break from it for a while, rooibos tea is a nice alternative with lots of health benefits.

What is it?

An herb from South Africa, rooibos has been made into tea and enjoyed for generations. It is a broom-like legume and comes in both red and green varieties. The most available is the red, which is oxidized, giving it the reddish-brown color of tea and a slightly sweet taste.

The green variety is unoxidized and is processed in a manner similar to that of green tea, making the end product a bit more expensive, and subsequently less popular and a bit more difficult to find. It does have twice the flavonoids as the red. The flavor is described as 'malty and slightly grassy' - somewhat different than the red variety.

Like other teas, rooibos has flavonoids that act as antioxidants, making it popular with the health conscious. It is also low in tannins compared to most black teas, and is caffeine-free. Rooibos is rich in many minerals including iron, calcium, potassium, copper, fluoride, manganese, zinc, magnesium and alpha hydroxy. It is purported to provide a whole host of health benefits, including:

• Reduces heart disease by providing protection through ACE inhibition

• Contains quercetin and luteolin, which are known to have cancer fighting qualities

• Is an anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, anti-mutagenic and anti-spasmodic

Variety of uses

In recent years, rooibos has been growing in popularity in Europe and the United States. You may even find it in your local coffee shop. Coffee shops around the world have begun offering rooibos-based variations of coffee drinks, such as "red espresso", "red lattes" and "red cappuccinos".

Rooibos tea can be consumed by kidney stone sufferers because it has no oxalic acid. It can be used to ease colic or stomach pains in infants for instant relief. It is a great thirst-quencher for athletes and can calm hyper children. One study found that special extraction of the alkaline extracts present in rooibos tea leaves seem to suppress HIV-induced cytopathicity, leading to the conclusion that daily intake may suppress HIV infection. (The extraction is important because regular rooibos tea doesn't have the anti-HIV activity.) Other studies find that rooibos is effective at preventing brain aging.

If you find rooibos tea at your local coffee shop or health food store, give it a try. Consider requesting it if you don't. It is a great beverage with rare nutrients not readily found in other plants. It's good for you and tasty too. You may like it enough to give it a permanent place in your diet.

Fukushima disaster is 'nuclear war without a war'

It has been more than a year now since the massive 9.0-plus magnitude earthquake and corresponding tsunami devastated the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant on the eastern coast of Japan, sending untold amounts of nuclear radiation into the environment. And to this day, the threat of nuclear fallout is ever-present all around the world in what some have described as a "nuclear war without a war."

Though governments and many media outlets have downplayed the disaster, its aftermath continues to threaten the health and well being of plants, animals and humans not only in Japan, but all around the world. Far worse than Chernobyl, the Fukushima catastrophe truly is a nuclear holocaust event with gradual, long-term consequences that we are only just now beginning to recognize and grasp.

Though the devastation was not delivered in one fell swoop via an atomic bomb, radioactive elements from Fukushima continue to be quietly delivered through air and ocean currents to soils, drinking water supplies, farms, lawns, children's playgrounds, airplanes and countless other sources. Products made with elements and materials that have been contaminated with radiation, particularly in Japan, are also exposing untold thousands, if not millions, of people to dangerous levels of nuclear radiation.

"Hazardous radioactive elements being released in the sea and air around Fukushima accumulate at each step of various food chains (for example, into algae, crustaceans, small fish, bigger fish, then humans; or soil, grass, cow's meat and milk, then humans)," writes Helen Caldicott in her piece, Fukushima: Nuclear Apologists Play Shoot the Messenger on Radiation, in The Age.

"Entering the body, these elements -- called internal emitters -- migrate to specific organs such as the thyroid, liver, bone, and brain, continuously irradiating small volumes of cells with high doses of alpha, beta and/or gamma radiation, and over many years often induce cancer."

Nuclear war, whether intentional or unintentional, has already been waged

Regardless of whether or not the Fukushima disaster was a natural event or a man-made terrorist conspiracy (http://www.naturalnews.com/032692_Fukushima_earthquake.html), the trigger has been pulled, and the quiet nuclear war has been set in motion. Fukushima's thousands of exposed fuel rods continue to remain in a precarious plight. Reactor 4 is on the verge of collapse, and radiation from existing leaks and damage continues to spread.

Politically, the entire nation of Japan is the biggest casualty of this nuclear war so far, as the country's economy is in dire straits, and on the verge of collapse. Tokyo is reportedly now suffering its first trade deficit since the 1980s, and the rest of the country's manufacturing base is quickly dwindling as the world grows increasingly leery of importing goods from Japan that may be contaminated with Fukushima radiation.

Because no efforts are being made to contain Fukushima, as was done with Chernobyl, the facility itself is essentially a grounded nuclear weapon that every second of every day is waging war against Planet Earth. And as far as the human race is concerned, thousands have already died as a result, with millions more to follow in the years and decades to come as the unrelenting spew of radiation settles in every crevice of the global ecology, spurring rapid increases in cancer and other deadly conditions.

Research shows vitamin D slashes risk of cancers by 77 percent; cancer industry refuses to support cancer prevention

Research conducted at the Creighton University School of Medicine in Nebraska has revealed that supplementing with vitamin D and calcium can reduce your risk of cancer by an astonishing 77 percent. This includes breast cancer, colon cancer, skin cancer and other forms of cancer. This research provides strong new evidence that vitamin D is the single most effective medicine against cancer, far outpacing the benefits of any cancer drug known to modern science.

The study involved 1,179 healthy women from rural Nebraska. One group of women was given calcium (around 1500 mg daily) and vitamin D (1100 IU daily) while another group was given placebo. Over four year, the group receiving the calcium and vitamin D supplements showed a 60 percent decrease in cancers. Considering just the last three years of the study reveals an impressive 77 percent reduction in cancer due to supplementation. (The full press release of this study is included below. Note that these astonishing effects were achieved on what many nutritionists consider to be a low dose of vitamin D. Exposure to sunlight, which creates even more vitamin D in the body, was not tested or considered, and the quality of the calcium supplements was likely not as high as it could have been (it was probably calcium carbonate and not high-grade calcium malate, aspartate or similar forms). What does all this mean? It means that if you take high-quality calcium supplements and get lots of natural sunlight exposure or take premium vitamin D supplements (such as those made from fish oil), you could easily have a greater reduction than the 77 percent reduction recorded in this study.

American Cancer Society opposes vitamin D

This research on vitamin D is such good news that the American Cancer Society, of course, had to say something against it. An ACS spokesperson, Marji McCullough, strategic director of nutritional epidemiology for the American Cancer Society, flatly stated that nobody should take supplements to prevent cancer.

If it seems surprising to you that the American Cancer Society -- which claims to be against cancer -- would dissuade people from taking supplements that slash their cancer risk by 77 percent, then you don't know much about the ACS. In my opinion, the ACS is an organization that actually prevents prevention and openly supports the continuation of cancer as a way to boost its power and profits. The ACS is the wealthiest non-profit in America and has very close ties to pharmaceutical companies, mammography equipment companies and other corporations that profit from cancer. Notice the name, too: It isn't the American Anti-Cancer Society, it's the American Cancer Society! What they really stand for is right in the name!

The cancer industry is a multi-billion dollar industry, and I've written extensively about the criminal organizations that protect and promote the industry. Just about everything the public is told about cancer by these cancer institutions is a lie. Those "race for the cure" cancer walks are a complete scam (they really aren't searching for any way to prevent cancer or cure cancer, they're only searching for new patented drugs to profit from cancer).

This research on vitamin D is a huge threat to the cancer industry profit mongers because it reveals a way to prevent cancer for free -- by seeking natural sunlight exposure and letting your skin manufacture your own powerful anti-cancer medicine (vitamin D). The idea that the cancer industry could lose 80% of its patients due to widespread education about vitamin D and sunlight scares the living daylights out of the cancer industry. Billions of dollars in cancer profits are at stake here, so the pro-cancer groups have to do everything they can to discredit vitamin D by creating doubt and confusion. The degree of dishonesty at work here is almost unbelievable to those who don't really know what's happening in the cancer industry.

Ten questions to ask yourself about the cancer industry

Consider these questions:

#1: Why does the cancer industry refuse to educate people about cancer prevention?

#2: If people keep donating money for the "search" for a cancer cure, why won't drug companies pledge to "open source" their patents on cancer drugs to benefit the people whose donations funded them in the first place? In other words, why do people donate money for cancer research but then get charged for cancer drugs?

#3: Why does the entire cancer industry so strongly dissuade people from using sunlight exposure to dramatically reduce their cancer risk? (Hint: Follow the money to the sunscreen industry...)

#4: Why have all the really good cancer supplements, clinics and naturopaths been banned, arrested or run out of the country? (Look up the FDA's oppression of Lane Labs over MGN-3 for a fascinating review of this...)

#5: The U.S. has poured billions of dollars into the cancer industry over the last three decades. Cancer cures were promised in the 1970's. Why are cancer rates still essentially the same today as they were in the 1970's?

#6: Why does the cancer industry continue to use chemotherapy, radiation and other toxic procedures to "kill tumors" when the latest science clearly shows that cancer tumors are only the symptoms, not the cause, of cancer? Broccoli, garlic, onions and sprouts all have powerful anti-cancer effects, as do dozens of rainforest herbs (Cat's Claw, for example), Chinese herbs and Western herbs. But the FDA threatens and censors any company that dares to mention cancer prevention on its supplement products. Why is the FDA enforcing a policy of nutritional ignorance with U.S. consumers? Why does the federal government want people to remain ignorant of methods for preventing or treating cancer?

You probably already know the answer to all these questions, because the answer is the same for each one: Corporate profits. Cancer is hugely profitable to treat. Substantially preventing cancer would result in a loss of billions of dollars in profits for the oncologists, drug companies, hospitals and clinics that currently prey upon the finances of cancer victims.

The cancer industry is operated like a criminal racket, using false information, intimidation, political pressure and propaganda to protect its power base and keep its corporations profitable. And that, my friends, is exactly why the industry is against the use of sunlight to prevent cancer. Free medicine from the sky? The very thought of it makes the cancer industry cringe. Sunlight doesn't even need a prescription, you see, and it can't be patented, either.

Preventing cancer the healthy way

Let me tell you how I prevent cancer. I take long walks in the desert with no shirt on, and I don't wear sunscreen. I soak up the sun's rays for many hours each week, and I never get a sun burn because I eat lots of antioxidant-rich superfoods, berries and fresh produce.

I drink a raw superfood smoothie each morning, made of fresh produce and superfoods. My two favorite recipes are chocolate (with raw cacao, coconut oil or macadamia nut oil, raw avocado, spirulina, quinoa, banana and almond milk) and super berry (fresh berries, freeze-dried berries, egg white protein, stevia, aloe vera gel, fresh cucumber or watermelon, celery).

I put no personal care products on my skin whatsoever: No deodorants, no fragrance, no skin creams, no cosmetics and no sunscreen. This alone saves me from exposure to hundreds of cancer-causing toxic chemicals added to personal care products. I refuse to use chemical laundry detergent and, instead, use natural laundry soap that grows on trees: Natural soap berries that we sell as a replacement for chemical laundry detergents.

Corporate-controlled U.S. government doesn't want to prevent cancer

The U.S. government doesn't want the population to be free of cancer. That's a strong statement, so let me offer you an undeniable piece of strong evidence to back that up: The artificially low RDA numbers for vitamin D.

One of the best ways to keep the population suffering from cancer is to enforce long-term nutritional deficiencies that lead to cancer. The US government accomplishes this by keeping the recommendations for vitamin D artificially low, practically guaranteeing that anyone who follows the recommendations will eventually be diagnosed with cancer. Vitamin D deficiency is the leading cause of breast cancer.

Most educated nutritionists agree that the daily dose of vitamin D for an adult should be at least 1000 IUs, perhaps as high as 1400. But the U.S. Institute of Medicine (IoM), which controls the recommendations on these things, currently states that adults under 50 only need 200 IUs of vitamin D a day. This policy is, in my opinion, an organized conspiracy to keep the American people diseased by making sure they stay deficient in anti-cancer nutrients. It serves the interests of all the powerful corporations and non-profits that run Washington. And yes, it is a conspiracy. The FDA doesn't want people to prevent cancer either. That's why they've aggressively attacked companies offering anti-cancer nutrients, and completely censored the very mention of the word "cancer" by supplement companies. In fact, the only reason I can print the information you're reading right now is because I sell no food or supplements and my free speech writing is not regulated by the FDA. If I were selling supplements and writing these same words you're reading right now, I would be arrested, charged with federal crimes, and put out of business by state and federal authorities. That's the reality of the oppressive medical environment under which we live today: Health is outlawed, and only disease is allowed to be promoted.

The cancer industry, you see, is not merely incompetent; it is criminal. Intentionally keeping a population sick so that you can profit from disease is a crime against humanity. And yet this is business as usual in America's modern cancer industry.

Discrediting simple, free and safe cancer prevention strategies is also criminal, and yet this is what the American Cancer Society seems to do at every opportunity.

Plotting to profit from the suffering of other humans beings is evil. And yet the entire revenue base of the cancer industry is based on precisely that: Keeping people alive long enough to "treat" them with overpriced toxic chemicals that can be billed to Medicare at 50,000% markups over their manufacturing cost.

Cancer is big, big business. And curing cancer is a threat to all the criminals participating in that industry: The non-profit employees, oncologists, doctors, federal regulators, drug company executives, med school propaganda teachers, pharmaceutical reps and many others. These people cannot allow cancer to be prevented or cured. Their jobs and careers are at stake.

A world free from cancer and full of abundance

Personally, I believe we could create a world virtually free of cancer. We could accomplish it in two generations by taking tough action to outlaw cancer-causing chemicals and investing in genuine cancer prevention education. Drug companies would lose trillions of dollars in profits, hospitals would lose huge amounts of patients, and pro-cancer non-profit groups would lose power, money and prestige. But guess what? We'd all be better off without cancer.

Here's a startling statistic: Did you know that reducing the cancer death rate by just 1% would be worth almost $500 billion to the U.S. economy over the next hundred years or so? (Source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) Drop the cancer rate by 10% and it's worth $5 trillion dollars to the economy. (These gains are due to increased productivity and life spans of working, contributing people.)

We know right now that vitamin D and calcium can slash cancer rates by 77 percent. Do the math on that, and you realize that sunlight and calcium could result in a $38.5 trillion boost to the U.S. economy over the next century.

That's enough economic productivity to pay off our entire national debt, build new schools in every town and city in the country, provide free college educations to all young people who wish to go to college, invest billions in new energy technologies and even fund massive health education campaigns to keep our population healthy. $38 trillion is a lot of money. With that kind of increased abundance, we could build a whole new society of health, wealth and education.

But guess what? The cancer industry won't let that happen. There's too much short term profit to be made in keeping everybody sick. The cancer industry is so evil that it will sell out our future in order to maintain power, profits and control over the people today. The cancer industry doesn't want cancer rates to go down, regardless of the benefits to society or individual lives. The cancer industry wants there to be MORE cancer, which is exactly why it opposes commonsense prevention strategies that would reduce cancers. (It's true, this industry actually opposes removing cancer-causing chemicals from the workplace...)

The bottom line in all this? New research shows us that using low-cost calcium and vitamin D supplements (or just natural sunlight), we could slash cancer rates by an astonishing 77 percent. The cancer industry opposes this and is firmly positioned as an opponent of cancer prevention. The industry depends on cancer to grow its own power and profits, and it will invest in the de-education of the public in order to maximize its own revenues.

Cures for cancer exist all around us: Sunlight, rainforest herbs, anti-cancer foods and superfoods, etc. The causes of cancer are well known: Toxic chemicals in foods, cosmetics, personal care products, home cleaning products, and so on. So why don't we, as a nation, take steps to outlaw the things that cause cancer while promoting the things that prevent cancer?

The reason, once again, is because there's too much money at stake here. The corporations are in charge, and as long as they're running the show, cancer cures or prevention strategies that really work will simply not be tolerated.

OMAHA, Neb., June 8 -- Most Americans and others are not taking enough vitamin D, a fact that may put them at significant risk for developing cancer, according to a landmark study conducted by Creighton University School of Medicine.

The four-year, randomized study followed 1,179 healthy, postmenopausal women from rural eastern Nebraska.* Participants taking calcium, as well as a quantity of vitamin D3 nearly three times the U.S. government's Recommended Daily Amount (RDA) for middle-age adults, showed a dramatic 60 percent or greater reduction in cancer risk than women who did not get the vitamin.

The results of the study, conducted between 2000 and 2005, were reported in the June 8 online edition of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

"The findings are very exciting. They confirm what a number of vitamin D proponents have suspected for some time but that, until now, have not been substantiated through clinical trial," said principal investigator Joan Lappe, Ph.D., R.N., Creighton professor of medicine and holder of the Criss/Beirne Endowed Chair in the School of Nursing. "Vitamin D is a critical tool in fighting cancer as well as many other diseases."

Other Creighton researchers involved in the study included Robert Recker, M.D.; Robert Heaney, M.D.; Dianne Travers-Gustafson, M.S.; and K. Michael Davies, Ph.D.

Research participants were all 55 years and older and free of known cancers for at least 10 years prior to entering the Creighton study. Subjects were randomly assigned to take daily dosages of 1,400-1,500 mg supplemental calcium, 1,400-1,500 mg supplemental calcium plus 1,100 IU of vitamin D3, or placebos. National Institutes of Health funded the study.

Over the course of four years, women in the calcium/vitamin D3 group experienced a 60 percent decrease in their cancer risk than the group taking placebos.

On the premise that some women entered the study with undiagnosed cancers, researchers then eliminated the first-year results and looked at the last three years of the study. When they did that, the results became even more dramatic with the calcium/vitamin D3 group showing a startling 77 percent cancer-risk reduction.

In the three-year analysis, there was no statistically significant difference in cancer incidence between participants taking placebos and those taking just calcium supplements.

Through the course of the study, 50 participants developed nonskin cancers, including breast, colon, lung and other cancers.

Lappe said further studies are needed to determine whether the Creighton research results apply to other populations, including men, women of all ages, and different ethnic groups. While the study was open to all ethnic groups, all participants were Caucasian, she noted.

There is a growing body of evidence that a higher intake of vitamin D may be helpful in the prevention and treatment of cancer, high blood pressure, fibromyalgia, diabetes mellitus, multiple sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis and other diseases.

Humans make their own vitamin D3 when they are exposed to sunlight. In fact, only 10-15 minutes a day in a bright summer sun creates large amounts of the vitamin, Lappe said. However, people need to exercise caution since the sun's ultraviolet B rays also can cause skin cancer; sunscreen blocks most vitamin D production.

In addition, the latitude at which you live and your ancestry also influence your body's ability to convert sunlight into vitamin D. People with dark skin have more difficulty making the vitamin. Persons living at latitudes north of the 37th parallel -- Omaha is near the 41st parallel -- cannot get their vitamin D naturally during the winter months because of the sun's angle. Experts generally agree that the RDA** for vitamin D needs to be increased substantially, however there is debate about the amount. Supplements are available in two forms -- vitamin D2 and vitamin D3. Creighton researchers recommend vitamin D3, because it is more active and thus more effective in humans.

* Study participants came from the Nebraska counties of Douglas, Colfax, Cuming, Dodge, Saunders, Washington, Sarpy, Burt and Butler. ** RDA recommendations for vitamin D are 200 IU/d, birth-age 50; 400 IU/d, 50-70 years; and 600 IU/d, 70 years and older.
