Fighting fatigue - top foods, herbs, supplements and tips

It's no secret that many people experience some level of fatigue on a regular basis. Whether it's at the office, at home or anywhere else, fatigue can truly make you miserable and it can cause the quality of your work suffer. Fatigue makes you feel both mentally and physically tired and weak. In short, it's no fun. All too often people that suffer from fatigue reach for an energy drink. While this method may work for the short term, it's only masking the root cause of the fatigue, while at the same time causing negative health consequences.

A smarter and more permanent approach to beating fatigue is to determine the real cause and start making the changes there. It is safe to say that the primary reasons most people suffer from fatigue are poor diet, lack of nutrients, dehydration, lack of exercise and lack of sleep.

Diet

Here is a list of types of foods that are known to cause fatigue: starchy carbohydrates such as cakes, cookies, doughnuts and foods that contain bleached and processed flour. Any of these types of high-sugar foods that contain lots of simple carbohydrates will give you short-term energy followed by a serious crash.

Certain foods do the opposite and fight fatigue by supplying long term, clean energy with no crash.

Unprocessed complex carbohydrates are the enemy of fatigue. Some of the very best fatigue fighting foods include quinoa, plums, nuts and brewers yeast. Be sure to include sufficient amounts of protein in your diet as well, as a lack of sufficient protein can cause fatigue. If you don't eat meat, buying either a whey or vegetarian protein powder can make this much easier.

Exercise

Lack of exercise can cause the body to feel tired and fatigued because the metabolism slows down and the body starts storing excess fat. Being overweight alone can cause chronic fatigue. Even mild daily exercise is extremely effective in reversing this.

Going for walks outside during the day will help increase your blood circulation. Poor circulation is a known cause of fatigue. Going for daily walks is an easy way to stay healthy and is extremely useful in weight management. Even if you only have a 10 or 15 minute break at work, going for a short walk outside can make you feel refreshed and re-energized.

Dehydration

Dehydration is an under-recognized leading cause of fatigue. Many people don't drink water at all during the day; instead they drink soda, energy drinks and coffee, all of which can cause even further dehydration. Dehydration not only causes fatigue, but a variety of negative side effects including:

-Joint pain
-Dry skin
-Muscle cramps
-Bloating
-High blood pressure
-Build up of toxins in the body
-Weight gain

Dehydration is the sole reason may people experience fatigue. Luckily this is an easy one to fix; drink a minimum of 8 glasses of water a day to avoid dehydration.

Vitamins, herbs and supplements for fighting fatigue

Supplementing a proper diet and exercise regiment with the right nutrients can give you the edge you need to stay energized and stave off fatigue.

The best fatigue fighting herbs, vitamins and supplements include:

-Ginseng
-Longan berries
-Bee pollen
-Chlorella
-Magnesium
-Carnitine
-B vitamins
-Silymarin

Other causes of fatigue

Other external factors that can cause fatigue include:

-Alcohol
-Caffeine
-Prescription drugs
-Illegal drugs
-Stress

Being sure to get between seven and eight hours of sleep every night is vitally important in the battle against fatigue. If you feel that your diet, exercise regiment, sleeping schedule and supplement regiment are all on track and you've ruled out any other external causes of fatigue, but you're still experiencing fatigue it may have another cause such as anemia, diabetes or a thyroid disorder, which is something that you should visit your doctor or natural health practitioner about.

Fukushima radiation cover-up continues - here's how to protect yourself

It's not just Fukushima, though that may be enough. The northern hemisphere especially had been inundated with radioactive fallout by atmospheric nuclear weapons testing from 1950 to 1963. The Nevada testing area alone produced 1200 nuclear explosions that emitted radioactive particles across the USA.

The Chernobyl incident in 1986 affected hundreds of thousands throughout Europe, Scandinavia, and Russia. The boom in nuclear reactor power plants had already started and was constantly increasing, along with considerable radiation leaking.

A 1996 international court interpretation of international treaties opened the door for widespread use of depleted uranium (DU) that had been prohibited for use as ammunition projectiles that could pierce armor. Tons of DU ammunition has been used in Bosnia and the Mideast since, leaving a radioactive mess that will last for life times.

Depleted uranium is a deceptive term. It is basically what's left after enriched uranium is used for reactors. But DU cannot be used in reactors anymore. DU is still highly radioactive, so using it for ammunition creates a lucrative industry instead of an expensive toxic waste disposal issue.

Part of DU's effectiveness is the fact that DU projectiles ignite on impact and penetrate armor. But that process also functions to emit radioactive vapors and particles in the immediate area, which accumulates in the environment and contaminates locally for life times as well as getting carried by winds for miles to contaminate elsewhere.

The point of this lengthy introduction is to make you aware that we have been and continue to be immersed in excess radioactivity from several sources. Fukushima has added more dangerous radioactivity, but corporate-government-media officials deny its dangers.

What must we do?

Forget trying to influence governments, the nuclear power industry and military industrial complex, or the mainstream media. They have circled their vested interest wagons, denied the dangers, and ignored the solutions. We have to take radiation protection upon ourselves.

Vitamin C: This antioxidant is effective against radiation. Radioactive atoms (radionuclides) have missing electrons that they replace by stealing electrons from other atoms causing cellular and DNA damage. That's oxidation in a nutshell. An antioxidant gives those atoms the electrons they need, thus neutralizing oxidative stress.

It's not easy swallowing 10 grams total of ascorbic acid at intervals daily. Injected C or IV C is hard to come by. Here's a way to maximize cellular absorption of vitamin C without force feeding to the point of diarrhea or injection and IV intake - check out the sources (http://www.naturalnews.com/034591_vitamin_C_mega-dose_healing.html).

Vitamin D3: Make sure you supplement with vitamin D3, not just D or D2. Despite conventional dermatology's advice, strong sunlight exposure to skin is the safest way to up your D3 blood levels. Despite conventional medicine's standard, 25(OH)D tested D3 levels at 20 nanograms/milliliter are not enough; 50 to 70 ng/mg would be optimum.

Whey: Pure whey provides all the precursors for the master oxidant glutathione, details here (http://www.naturalnews.com/027114_glutathione_antioxidant_GSH.html).

Other neutralizing supplements should include iodine or potassium iodide. Most of us are iodine deficient. Potassium itself works well at inhibiting radionuclides. The sleep supplement melatonin protects against radiation.

Sulfur supplements are recommended, and bicarbonate of soda is also effective at neutralizing radiation in our organs.

Magnesium intake should be increased along with calcium; both are effective at protecting against radiation poisoning.

Superfoods, chlorella and spirulina, have actually been used effectively where radioactive leaks occurred. Kelp is another possibility.

Bentonite clay or zeolite may help rid radionuclides from internal tissues.

Herbs: Those helpful for preventing radioactive poisoning are milk thistle, ginkgo, and rosemary (http://www.naturalnews.com).

How to keep your kidneys healthy, happy and stone-free

Kidney stones are one of the most excruciatingly painful conditions a person can develop. But a recent study published in the Journal of Urology has found that maintaining high intake of calcium and fluids, and cutting back intake of refined salt, can help to prevent kidney stones from forming. Dandelion, aloe vera, apple cider vinegar, cranberry, magnesium, and potassium can all help prevent, or even pass, kidney stones as well.

Dr. Mathew Sorensen, a urologist at the University of Washington School of Medicine (UWSC) in Seattle and his colleagues evaluated data on more than 78,000 American women who were tracked for eight years. During this time, one in 40, or 2.5 percent, of these women reportedly developed kidney stones for the first time.

What the researchers discovered, however, was that high intake of calcium and fluids was linked to a lowered risk of developing kidney stones, while those with the lowest intakes had the highest risk. The 20 percent of women who ate the most calcium, for instance, were 28 percent less likely to develop kidney stones compared to the 20 percent of women who ate the least calcium.

The findings were similar among women who drank the most fluids, which were 20 percent less likely to develop kidney stones compared to those who drank the least fluids. Salt intake, however, appeared to have the biggest effect, as the 20 percent of women who ate the most salt were 61 percent more likely to develop kidney stones than the 20 percent who ate the least salt.

The calcium finding is particularly interesting, as it is widely believed that calcium intake contributes to the formation of kidney stones. But it appears as though eating foods naturally-rich in calcium -- sesame seeds, sardines, collard greens, spinach, kelp, garbanzo beans, and broccoli are a few good examples -- can help prevent the formation of kidney stones.

Dandelion, a powerful medicinal herb that is a known diuretic, also helps increase the amount of urine the body produces, which is believed to help dilute the components that contribute to the formation of kidney stones, and flush them from the body. Aloe vera, apple cider vinegar, cranberry, magnesium, and potassium can all help with preventing kidney stones as well.

"Protein and oxalates in the body have more to do with causing kidney stones than calcium does," write Dr. George Kessler and Col. Leen Kapklein in their book The Bone Density Program: 6 Weeks to Strong Bones and a Healthy Body. "[T]he more natural calcium you get from the foods in your diet, the less likely you are to develop kidney stones."

Optimum magnesium intake might prevent ADD/ADHD, Alzheimer's and mental decline

Magnesium, the fourth most abundant mineral in the body, plays a crucial role in activating over 300 chemical responses. It is responsible for the proper formation of bones, maintaining normal muscle function, regulating body temperature, and proper absorption of calcium. Increasingly, medical science is coming to believe that magnesium and other minerals missing from today's diet might prevent cognitive disorders such as ADD, ADHD and bipolar disorder, as well as help prevent Alzheimer's and mental decline as we age.

Eat and supplement wisely to avoid a magnesium deficiency

A deficiency in magnesium affects virtually every area of the body and can present itself with headaches, backaches, muscle spasms, heart arrhythmia, high blood pressure, PMS, osteoporosis, kidney stones, insomnia, anxiety, depression, tingling and numbness in limbs and extremities, and constipation. Magnesium is also a powerful immune modulator and magnesium deficiency has been linked to immune disorders and deficiencies, such as triggering or worsening the symptoms in such conditions as hyperthyroidism, fibromyalgia, Reynaud's and multiple sclerosis.

Magnesium is essential for the proper absorption of calcium. Many instances of magnesium deficiency are simply due to an excessive intake of calcium. We are told about the benefits of taking calcium but, sadly, magnesium (which is needed for proper calcium absorption) is very seldom mentioned. Too much calcium can actually be responsible for adverse health conditions. Dairy foods, for example, are rich in calcium and it is easy for dairy eaters to consume too much calcium if they do not balance their diet with foods rich in magnesium.

The premise that bone loss is due to a calcium deficiency has been proven to be incorrect. Too much calcium in the body is actually responsible for an increased risk of osteoporosis as well as kidney stones and heart attacks. For proper absorption, one should eat or supplement at a ratio of 2:1 calcium to magnesium.

Our Standard American Diet (SAD) is woefully lacking in proper nutrition such as magnesium. Toxins and additives in our diets often prevent our bodies from properly absorbing what little magnesium and other nutrients that we do consume - as do other culprits such as alcohol, caffeine, and smoking. Because magnesium is not produced by the body, it is important to eat and supplement wisely to make sure that the body receives the amount it needs.

Due to poor eating habits and mineral depleted soils, it is estimated that over 80 percent of the American population is deficient in magnesium. The US minimum RDA for magnesium is 420 mg for adult males and 320 mg for adult females. Clinical nutritionists, however, report mounting evidence that this level, in itself, is too low and contributes to the list of degenerative diseases caused by a magnesium deficiency. The optimum daily amount they recommend is between 500 to 700 mg a day.

It is important to eat healthy foods, focusing on as many raw fruits and vegetables as possible. Foods rich in magnesium include: spinach, avocado, bananas, almonds, cashews, dry roasted peanuts, peanut butter, raisins, oatmeal, crude wheat bran, crude wheat germ, whole wheat bread, halibut, cooked black-eyed peas, baked potato with skin, natural plain yogurt, brown long grained cooked rice, and cooked lentils.

Even with the best of diets, however, mineral depletion in the soil over the last hundred years makes it difficult to get enough magnesium through diet alone. Therefore, it is often important to make sure that the body is getting its required amount of magnesium through supplementation. Two excellent ways to supply your body with magnesium are by using transdermal magnesium oil and Epsom salt baths.

DHEA Protocol

“Magnesium chloride, especially when applied transdermally, can gradually increase DHEA in a natural way” Dr. Norman Shealy

“It is commonly reported that decreasing DHEA levels are inevitable with aging. But I have seen healthy, active eighty-year-olds with optimal DHEA levels and I have seen stressed-out thirty-year-olds with low or deficient levels of DHEA. Very low DHEA levels often precede a major illness by several years. Insulin, blood sugar, and cortisone all cause increased secretion of DHEA into urine. Prolonged stress, which may raise insulin, blood sugar and cortisol, eventually leads to low DHEA blood levels.”  Doctor Norman Shealy

“DHEA has been shown to possess multitargeted antioxidant activity, including effectiveness against glucose-induced lipid peroxidation. This protects the kidneys against oxidative damage and impairment of cell growth, suggesting effectiveness in overcoming chronic renal complications associated with diabetes.” Brighardello et al 2000

“Animal studies indicate that DHEA may have chemopreventive effects (5) (6), may
block the development of tumors (7) and enhance immune response following hepatitis (8) and influenza (9) vaccinations. DHEA may play a role in increasing immune response in acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) (2). In clinical trials, DHEA has been shown to be effective in treating major depression (10), schizophrenia induced anxiety (11), systematic lupus erythematosus (12), osteoporosis (13), erectile dysfunction (14) and Addison's disease (15) (16) (17) (16) (18).” Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center

“DHEA is a major marker for age and health. Its major effect in a coping person is anti-stress, meaning that the increased cortisone produced by stress is subsequently normally brought back down to baseline by a rise in DHEA.” Doctor Norman Shealy

“Decreases in DHEA levels have been linked to a number of chronic and degenerative diseases including cancer, coronary artery disease, depression, stress disorders and neurological dysfunctioning.” Straub et al

“DHEA-S may have substantial therapeutic benefits for the treatment of ischemic
 stroke.” Lapchak et al 2000

“Levels of estradiol were higher and levels of DHEA were lower in rheumatoid arthritis patients compared to subjects not suffering from chronic inflammation.” Tengstrand et al

“In animal models pregnenolone and DHEA have been shown to profoundly stimulate the healing of neurologic injury.” Li H et al

“Individuals with macular degeneration tend to have low blood levels of the hormone DHEA as well as a higher risk of cardiovascular mortality.” Life Extension

“DHEA is the most abundant of all steroids and is released from the adrenal glands. DHEA is involved in the manufacturing of testosterone, estrogen, progesterone and corticosteroids. The decline of DHEA parallels that of growth hormone. By age 65, the body makes only 10-20% of DHEA that was made at age 20. It has been shown in animal studies to act as an agent of anti-obesity, anti-cancer, anti-autoimmune disease, anti-stress, anti-infectious disease. In other words, it is an all around anti-aging drug. It may also boost the function of the brain as the brain tissue contains 6 times more DHEA than any other tissue in the body.”  Doctor Michael Lam MD

"DHEA appears to exert a positive role in bone metabolism by inhibiting bone resorption and stimulating bone formation. It also seems to aid calcium absorption. DHEA has proved effective in clinical trials treating osteoporosis. However, a correlation between DHEA and bone mineral density appears variably in women and not at all in men." Life Extension

Levels of DHEA and DHEA-s in older men strongly predict death by CVD."  Doctor Claes Ohlsson University of Gothenburg

DHEA Hormone Feedstock

"Prof. Shulman found that women being treated for infertility who also received supplements of DHEA were three times more likely to conceive than women being treated without the additional drug. The results were recently published in AYALA, the journal of the Israeli Fertility Association.”    DHEA for Infertility, Note this is demonstrating just how important DHEA is for ANY hormone related problem

DHEA or dehyroepiandrosterone is a natural steroid hormone secreted by the adrenal gland, gonads and your brain. DHEA is a key testosterone (See Testosterone Protocol) estrogen and other steroids precursor, produced naturally by your body. As you get older your DHEA levels usually begin to rapidly decline. By the time you reach 40 your DHEA level has fallen to less than half of its levels when you were 20; by 60 it will typically be 1/4. DHEA helps boost your testosterone levels; your bone strength, proper insulin balance and helps keep your weight (See Overweight Protocol) good among other good things. Cholesterol is the feedstock your body uses to manufacture DHEA so you want to assure its supply. Women and men who are having problems with their bones should have their DHEA levels checked as a low DHEA level can result in as much as a 40-fold increase in your risk of osteoporosis.

Youthful DHEA levels help

  • Reduce risk of many diseases including cancer, cardiovascular and diabetes
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Reduce stress levels
  • Reduce bone loss
  • Reduce Cancer proliferation
  • Reduce depression
  • Reduce stress
  • Reduce effective aging
  • Reduce viral loads
  • Increase bone formation
  • Increase hormone availability
  • Increase immune response
  • Increase perceptions of physical and psychological well-being
  • Maintain skin
  • Maintain bone
  • Maintain memory
  • Maintain nerves
  • Maintain brain
  • Maintain heart
  • Maintain vascular system
  • Maintain proper weight
  • Balance Insulin
  • Build muscle

“Magnesium chloride, especially when applied transdermally, is reported by Doctor Norman Shealy to gradually increase DHEA in a natural way. Doctor Shealy has determined that when the body is presented with adequate levels of magnesium at the cellular level, the body will begin to naturally produce DHEA and also DHEA-S. Because of the problems with supplementing directly with DHEA, transdermal magnesium chloride mineral therapy holds great promise for DHEA hormonal supplementation because taking magnesium could counteract the heart attack and stroke hazards of synthetic DHEA hormone replacement therapy.” Magnesium for Life Mark Sircus

Through the use of Magnesium Oil, women have reported complete abatement of menopausal symptoms and some have even returned to their menstrual cycle and the possible explanation for this is that rising magnesium levels brings up DHEA levels.

Avoid for optimal DHEA levels

To Increase DHEA

Be sure to consult your doctor before taking supplemental DHEA. Have your levels checked; youthful DHEA levels fall between 300 and 500 mcg/dl. If you discover your levels are low, discuss with your doctor the best supplemental dosage and the optimum DHEA level you want. IMO always seriously attempt to raise your DHEA levels naturally for a good six months before using supplemental DHEA.

IMO it is VERY important to use every means to bring up your DHEA levels after you pass 40 or so.

Be very careful with DHEA supplements however they may shut down your body’s natural DHEA production. Also by supplementing DHEA it’s possible to get too high a blood level of DHEA which may cause you no end of serious problems. IMO find a good integrative doctor to help and test your levels if you must supplement DHEA.

DHEA is so important for so many functions IMO it’s worth the effort to try and get your body to produce more DHEA. Magnesium chloride oil seems to be the best way to do this but I use them all. I use transdermal Magnesium Chloride oil, HGH, exercise and every other indirect method to attempt to raise my DHEA levels.

Caution: Do not take this or any other hormone (See Hormone Supplements Protocol) without researching hormone supplementation and having your levels checked. In particular do not take supplemental hormones if under the age of about forty. It is strongly suggested you consult with a knowledgeable Integrative Doctor on hormone supplementation. Women especially should consult a  knowledgeable Integrative Doctor on DHEA and all hormone supplementation. EXCEPTIONS: Women with breast, uterine, or ovarian cancer or men with prostate cancer should not take supplemental DHEA.

DHEA can be used Short Term Episodically to Boost Immunity

The administration of 50 mg a day of DHEA to elderly men resulted in the following immune enhancements compared to placebo. YOU only want to do this in a life threatening situation IMO.

  • Increase of 35% in the number of monocyte immune cells
  • Increase of 29% in the number of B immune cells
  • Increase of 62% in B-cell activity
  • Increase of 40% in T-cell activity
  • Increase of 50% in interleukin-2
  • Increase of 22% to 37% in natural killer cell number
  • Increase of 45% in natural killer cell activity.

What Is the Best Edema Treatment?

The term edema refers to swelling in the body due to fluid retention. The swelling can be restricted to one area of the body, such as the ankles, or can include the entire body. The best edema treatment depends a great deal on what is causing the edema. Edema that has no known cause is called idiopathic edema. Edema can also be the result of heart and circulatory problems.

One of the first treatments recommended for edema is to reduce the level of salt in the diet. A dietary salt restriction may be all that is necessary for the edema to resolve itself. It is also possible to reduce sodium levels in the body by the use of prescription diuretics. If your doctor prescribes diuretics, he will monitor you carefully to prevent side effects of the medication.

An effective edema treatment that does not require medication is daily bed rest. This is particularly effective if the edema is present only in the legs. Lying with the feet slightly elevated may be all that is necessary to reduce the presence of edema. Some doctors also dispense elastic support stockings for patients that are suffering from edema.

There are a variety of herbal treatments and vitamin supplements that can be used as an edema treatment. The effectiveness varies with the individual, and it is important that these not be taken without first discussing them with your physician. If you are taking prescription diuretics or are suffering from heart failure induced edema, it is particularly important that your physician know everything that you are taking.

Magnesium is a vitamin supplement that shows promise at reducing edema. Magnesium can be purchased on its own, or as part of a multivitamin. It is a bulky vitamin, and it is unlikely that you will find a multivitamin that has 100% of the recommended daily amount of magnesium in it.

Evening primrose oil is a rich source of gamma linolenic acid, which may work as an edema treatment for some people. Some researchers believe that evening primrose oil’s effectiveness is increased by combining it with fish oil supplements. This combination is considered particularly effective for treatment of edema that is associated with premenstrual syndrome.

Ginko biloba is an herbal supplement that is believed to support circulatory health. Its positive effect on the circulatory system is believed to decrease fluid accumulation associated with edema. Another herbal supplement, horse chestnut, is also believed to support circulatory health as well as prevent capillaries from leaking fluid into the surrounding tissue. One final herbal supplement commonly used as an edema treatment is dandelion leaf. It is important to realize that dandelion leaf works as a diuretic, so people taking prescription diuretics should not use it.

Magnesium Offers Strong Radiation Protection

One would not normally think that magnesium deficiency can increase the risk of cancer yet we will find that just as severe dehydration or asphyxiation can cause death, magnesium deficiency can lead directly to cancer. It is known that carcinogenesis induces magnesium distribution disturbances, causing magnesium mobilization through blood cells and magnesium depletion in non-neoplastic tissues. Magnesium deficiency is carcinogenic, and in the case of solid tumors, a high level of supplemented magnesium inhibits carcinogenesis.

Researchers from Japan's National Cancer Center in Tokyo have found that an increased intake of magnesium reduces a man's risk of colon cancer by over 50 percent. Several studies have shown an increased cancer rate in regions with low magnesium levels in soil and drinking water. In Egypt the cancer rate was only about 10 percent of that in Europe and America. In the rural fellah it was practically non-existent. The main difference was an extremely high magnesium intake of 2.5-3g in these cancer-free populations, ten times more than in most western countries.

For all of these reasons and a hundred more, magnesium oil remains the number one item in my cancer protocol and thus number one for radiation exposure. Magnesium is our first line of defense against both.

It is in a list of medicinals that prevent and treat
cancer that we find helpful substances that treat
and strengthen us against radiation contamination.

"In the years leading up to Chernobyl, some dairy farmers in Austria were using remineralization as a part of their operations. They added rock dust to liquid manure as well as combining it with compost, thereby removing odors and greatly increasing soil biota. As a result, cows had twice the normal lifespan and produced much more milk. Amazingly enough, after Chernobyl, the cheeses that were remineralized (as well as biodynamic cheeses) measured no radioactivity whatsoever. Austrians would stand in long lines in order to buy these safe, remineralized products," writes Joanna Campe.

Iodine is obviously not the only substance that we should run to in the face of increasing radiation threats. Magnesium is a vital mineral whose lack leaves us open to not only radioactive damages but also those from heavy metals and thousands of chemicals, which we are commonly exposed to. Mercury and now a long list of radioactive particles are floating in the environment like invisible clouds that have spread out everywhere. They are raining down on us, damaging and damning our future. We can no longer be passive about building our defenses against the toxic onslaught.

Without sufficient magnesium, the body accumulates toxins and acid residues, degenerates rapidly, and ages prematurely.

Just about everyone who is writing protocols for radiation toxicity is forgetting about the importance of magnesium salts. Worse still are governments and the entire institution of medicine that are purposely ignorant about magnesium, so they cannot possibly be trusted for valuable health and medical information that will help us in our time of dire need. The need was dire before Fukushima but they did not want to admit that; they let the public get obsessed with CO2 emissions and said nothing about the mercury. Now with radioactive nuclides steadily building up in the background, we are in trouble than any of us care to admit. Today the situation has gone nuclear and there has never before been a need so great for detoxification and chelation.

Magnesium is a crucial factor in the natural self-cleansing and detoxification responses of the body. Magnesium is also necessary for effective chelation. It stimulates the sodium potassium pump on the cell wall and this initiates the cleansing process in part because the sodium-potassium-ATPase pump regulates intracellular and extracellular potassium levels. The healthy cell wall favors intake of nutrients and elimination of waste products.

The involvement of free radicals in tissue injury induced by magnesium deficiency causes an accumulation of oxidative products in heart, liver, kidney, skeletal muscle tissues and in red blood cells, leaving them more vulnerable to oxidative stress caused by radiation exposure. Both radiation exposure and heavy metals produce oxidative stress through the creation of increased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS -- oxygen free radicals, peroxides, and singlet oxygen). It is known that these increased levels of intracellular ROS are sufficient to trigger apoptosis (cell death).

Glutathione is Magnesium-Dependent

Glutathione protects the cells from oxidative-stress-induced apoptosis and glutathione levels are magnesium dependent! "Glutathione is a very important detoxifying agent, enabling the body to get rid of undesirable toxins and pollutants. It forms a soluble compound with the toxin that can then be excreted through the urine or the gut. The liver and kidneys contain high levels of glutathione as they have the greatest exposure to toxins. The lungs are also rich in glutathione partly for the same reason. Many cancer-producing chemicals, heavy metals, drug metabolites etc. are disposed of in this way," says Dr. Patricia Kongshavn, former professor, department of medicine at McGill University.

Glutathione is a polypeptide,
C10H17N3O6S, of glycine, cysteine, and glutamic acid.

Glutathione synthetase requires γ-glutamyl cysteine, glycine, ATP, and magnesium ions to form glutathione. In magnesium deficiency, the ss y-glutamyltranspeptidase is lowered. There is a direct relationship between cellular magnesium, GSH/GSSG ratios, and tissue glucose metabolism. Magnesium deficiency causes glutathione loss and this is unwelcome as the clouds of radiation are touching down across the northern hemisphere. Magnesium deficiency causes glutathione loss, which is not at all healthy because glutathione helps to defend the body against damage from cigarette smoking, exposure to radiation, cancer chemotherapy, and toxins such as alcohol and just about everything else.

According to Dr. Russell Blaylock, low magnesium is associated with dramatic increases in free radical generation as well as glutathione depletion and this is vital since glutathione is one of the few antioxidant molecules known to neutralize mercury. "For every molecule of pesticide that your body detoxifies, you throw away or use up forever a molecule of glutathione, magnesium and more," says Dr. Sherry Rogers who goes on to say that, "Your body uses nutrients to make this glutathione and it uses up energy as well. Every time we detoxify a chemical, we use up, lose, throw away forever, a certain amount of nutrients."

Mineral Deficiencies

Deficiencies in basic minerals like magnesium and selenium can make all the difference between health and disease, between being able to withstand chemical, heavy metal and radiation exposure. Dr. Rogers has indicated that there is as much as a 500-fold difference in the ability of individuals to detoxify the same chemicals and much of that will be true for radiation as well. A key marker of this difference is each individual's magnesium level. Deficiencies in magnesium will wreak havoc with our body's ability to detoxify and chelate heavy radioactive particles and explains much of the difference between one person withstanding radiation exposures and another person falling to radiation sickness.

Dr. Leslie Fisher has treated in excess of 35,000 patients where mineral therapy was prescribed as the sole form of medication. He has conducted research within his own clinics and the Department of Psychiatry, Austin Hospital, Melbourne. Mineral therapy is the foundation upon which chelation treatments and protocols are built. Magnesium does protect cells from aluminum, mercury, lead, cadmium, beryllium and nickel, which explains why re-mineralization is so essential for heavy metal detoxification and chelation as well as radiation protection. Magnesium is essential for the survival of our cells but takes on further importance now where our bodies are being bombarded on a daily basis with heavy metals and radiation.

Radiation and Diabetes

No one is going to convince the public that the increasing radiation will have a general effect on our health that can be easily traced back to the source. Even before we get cancer from radiation we have a general down-spiraling of body functions because of all the oxidative stress. In my book, New Paradigms in Diabetes, I write extensively about the direct relationship between magnesium deficiency and the onset of diabetes.

Pancreatic beta cells are sensitive to reactive oxygen species (ROS) attack when they are exposed to oxidative stress, because of the relatively low expression of antioxidant enzymes such as catalase and glutathione peroxidase. Diabetes is typically accompanied by increased production of free radicals and/or impaired antioxidant defense capabilities, indicating a central contribution of reactive oxygen species. It is also a fact that ROS is one of the major factors that induce oxidative modification of DNA and gene mutation.

The Chernobyl incident was a major disaster of humanity, which has resulted in a plethora of health problems that are still far from being fully recognized. Most studies analyzing the medical consequences of this catastrophe have so far focused on diseases such as thyroid cancer, leukemia, immune and autoimmune pathology, even though an increase in the incidence of type 1 diabetes mellitus, a disorder involving the immune system, was observed within the residential population of Hiroshima among survivors of the atom bomb detonation. Studies have also shown that thymectomy and a sub-lethal dose of gamma radiation induces type 1 diabetes in rats.

Researchers at the Pediatric Hospital A. Meyer, Florence, Italy studied this question by assessing the incidence of the disease in children in Gomel, Belarus in the years subsequent to the Chernobyl disaster. The results of the study seem to confirm the hypothesis that environmental pollution such as that subsequent to the Chernobyl accident can cause diabetes.

Mass screening for diabetes mellitus has been conducted on 64,000-113,000 atomic bomb survivors residing in Hiroshima City since 1961. From 1971 to 1992 a 2.7-fold increase in the prevalence of diabetes mellitus was observed in males and a 3.2-fold increase in females.

We have a significant and documented increase in the incidence of type 1 diabetes in children and adolescents after Chernobyl in the radioactively contaminated area of Gomel compared to Minsk.

When beginning to build a protocol against the radiation and heavy metal onslaught, we need to stick with the basics and they are magnesium, iodine, sodium bicarbonate, vitamin C, selenium, clay, THC (cannabis),? as well as a natural chelator and superfoods. Properly filtered water also is essential. There is always more we can do but even affording these basics is a challenge to many.

Special Note: One of my readers wrote saying, "Thank you for the labor of love you've given to the inhabitants of the world. All the information about magnesium, iodine, baking soda, etc. is priceless and very much appreciated. I know we can't thank you enough for your generosity with the knowledge you've accumulated from all of your research. I know you've had your detractors -- ignore them!" These basic medicines are not only the mainstay of emergency rooms and intensive care wards but are the backbone of a my new form of medicine called Natural Allopathic Medicine, which makes sense in the age of toxicity that we all have live in.

Blackstrap Molasses

I've recently been reading about the health benefits of blackstrap molasses and am pretty intrigued. Not only is it a great source of iron and calcium, but it's also a source of potassium, magnesium, copper, and manganese. Many people claim to have reversed their gray hair with it. I bet this is at least partly due to the copper content, as copper deficiency can lead to prematurely gray hair.

Copper, an essential component of many enzymes, plays a role in a wide range of physiological processes including iron utilization, elimination of free radicals, development of bone and connective tissue, and the production of the skin and hair pigment called melanin ... Using two teaspoons of blackstrap molasses to sweeten your morning cereal and the coffee or tea you drink during the day will supply you with 14.0% of the daily recommended value for copper. whfoods.com

I also found a page of blackstrap molasses testimonials at earthclinic.com. At first I thought that site was selling molasses because the testimonials were so amazing - people claim the molasses cured cancer, acne, arthritis, and everything in between. However, the site actually looks pretty useful - it allows readers to comment on natural remedies.

I'm going to buy some today and will report back. I'm not sure how I'm going to eat it - it looks like mixing it in water is the most popular method.
